We had a wonderful time at the Jordan river temple Saturday evening doing family sealings. Laurie had a huge stack of family names for us to do! It was wonderful!

We even had a little miracle. Mom realized that she lost her hearing aid but wasn't sure when or where. We retraced her steps and Jenni found a tissue near the dressing stall that she decided to go throw away. When she went over to the garbage can, she found the hearing aid sitting next to it! What are the chances of finding such a small device?! We felt like it was Dad sending a message to say he thinks of us and is helping us on the other side. Happy Birthday Dad! We love and miss you!

We are hoping that more of you will be able to join us next time!

Paul has been called to serve as the mission president of the California Riverside mission. Karen tells me that it is 38 miles from Disneyland, though it is in a different mission. Palm Springs is part of their mission and the Redlands temple is also part of it. This part of California is very lucky to be gaining such a great family! Godspeed Smart family!

It would appear that Vivian wins the guessing contest with her guess of Anaheim, California. Allison and Tessie both guessed cities in California, but Vivian's guess was closest!

MAJOR MISSION HAPPENINGS!

So, apparently Andrew has been having such a great time that the whole Smart family thought they would try missionary service!
Paul and Karen Smart received a letter in the mail on Friday calling Paul to serve as a mission president. Jake and Stephi will be accompanying them. We are so proud of Paul and Karen and their worthiness to accept this important call. They will leave July 1st but will enter the MTC the last week of June for mission presidents seminar.

They won't find out until late February where they are going. Leave your comment below to put in a guess as to where they will be called to serve. There will be a prize to the person who guesses correctly first!

I don't know how official this is but here is a link to the missions that were available in 2008. I think this might give you an idea of where they could possibly be called.

Happy Birthday to Dad. He would have been 78 years old today. It is hard to believe he has been gone for almost 9 years. A few of us were able to do some family sealings in the Mount Oquirrh temple Thursday night. This is our way of honoring and remembering him. It was a wonderful evening. Those who have already visited this blog entry didn't get to see the rest of the entourage. Kevin and Amy King were also there with 3 of their daughters. They had to leave before the other picture was taken.

Laurie put together a trip for any interested Thomas cousins and their parents to go to the Jordan River temple this Saturday. She had quite a few family names to do. It was so great to be united in this family event of linking generations. Then Grandma treated everyone to dinner afterward in the temple cafeteria.

It was a wonderful event which we hope to make at least a yearly tradition! Thanks Laurie!!

The Young Victoria outing

Amy got a group of us together to go see The Young Victoria in SLC the day after Christmas. We all give it 2 enthusiastic thumbs up! We all want to study up on Queen Victoria and Prince Albert now. So far, this is the only theater that this movie is playing at. We all thought it was worth the trip and the company was pretty fun, too!

We had a wonderful time doing sealings at the Draper temple this evening. We do this every year near Dad's birthday as a way to honor him. Thanks to Laurie and Karen, we had a ton of family names. Sam's 50th Birthday

The Thomas family had a wonderful get together On Sun. evening. It was Mom's 79th birthday and Sam's 50th birthday is coming up on the 12th so we took this opportunity to celebrate both.

All 10 Thomas siblings were there and we all had a great time remembering all the fun Sam stories which also lead us to remember a lot of fun Dad stories and then a lot of fun Uncle Jim stories. It was a great night. Thanks to Karen, Jenni, and Laurie for bringing it about. And thanks,Sam, for being such an awesome person. And thanks to our sweet mother for all the sacrifice and love. We are truly blessed.

Just thought I would post a story about one of our great ancestors to remind us what a huge sacrifice they made to leave us the legacy they did! Happy Pioneer Day everyone and take a minute to think about what sacrifices our ancestors made for the Gospel and so we could live in this great country..... :)

John Deveraux

Member of the original Handcart Company

John Deveraux was born in England, a son of Joseph Deveraux and Elizabeth Hayward. He was christened 4 May 1800 in Dymock, Gloucestershire, England. He was known to have one brother, William.
He married Esther Cockshed in Ledbury, England on 26 February, 1827. They had five children: Ann, born 18 March 1828; Joseph (our ancestor), born 16 September 1829; John, born 18 March 1832 and died in 1833; Harriet, born 29 December 1833; and Esther, born 21 October 1838. Not much is known of Ann. Esther married James Baldwin and lived and died in England. Joseph (our ancestor) married Jane Lewis in England and later came to Utah with his family. (They are buried in the Salem, Utah Cemetery.) Harriet married Thomas Richins in England and came to Utah with her husband and baby on the same ship as her mother and father.
John and his wife, Esther, became dissatisfied with the Wesleyan Methodist Church to which they belonged. They joined a group of about 600 people of similar conviction, who called themselves the United Brethren. In his journal, Wilford Woodruff says, “This body of United Brethren were searching for light and truth, but had gone as far as they could, and were continually calling upon the Lord to open the way before them, and send them light and knowledge that they might know the true way to be saved.” Wilford Woodruff came to that part of the country in 1840, by revelation from the Lord and he baptized over 800 souls in 8 months, including all the United Brethren but one. John and Esther were 2 of the 800 souls he baptized.
When they were converted, they lived at Clencher’s Mill, Eastnor, near Ledbury, Herefordshire. They lived there sixteen years after they were baptized and then decided to go to Zion. Esther was not well but was anxious to get started. She was afraid if she died, her husband or children would not come. Esther’s friends told her she shouldn’t make such a journey but she would rather die on the way than not make the attempt.
John and Esther, along with their daughter, Harriet and her husband Thomas Richins and their 14 month old son, Albert Franklin registered with the ship on 10 March , 1856. The ship was the Enoch Train. John listed his age as 57 and his occupation as wagoner. They embarked 22 March, 1856 and set sail the next day. There were 534 Saints aboard (415 adults, 98 children, 21 infants under the age of 1 year.) After they had been on the water about 10 days, John’s wife, Esther, died. She was buried at sea.
On 9 June, 1856 they (John, Harriet, Thomas, and baby Albert) left Iowa City, Iowa with the first handcart company of which Edmund Ellsworth was captain. John had enough money to come by wagon team but deposited his money with the Perpetual Emigration fund so others show had none could come also. They walked and pulled their handcarts all they way to Utah.
After nearly 4 months of weary traveling, having been delayed by the breaking down of handcarts, and by sickness and death, they reached the Salt Lake Valley. The company was met by Brigham Young and a large number of saints in Emigration Canyon and were given a hearty welcome. Harriet used to tell how they brought watermelons up the canyon to greet them and how good and refreshing they tasted.
An article from the Church News dated 28 June 1958 says: “After the greetings and handshakes, the weary travelers feasted on cool, thirst quenching melons brought up from the valley. The entire party then paraded out of the canyon and down South Temple with the brass band playing triumphantly. Nearly everyone in the city lined the street on either side and hundreds joined the procession, shouting and waving as it moved west to the 16th Ward square.”
On the same ship and handcart company as John and family was a small blue-eyed widow with her two daughters. She was Ann Perkins Price. They were married 10 July 1857 and lived in Salt Lake City for a few years and then were called to settle what is now Goshen in Utah County. They built a cabin there and lived there more than 20 years. People liked to visit this sweet, kindly old couple. But when they were asked to tell of their experiences getting to Utah, they replied, “It was too hard, and we don’t want to talk about it. We are glad we are in Zion so our children and grandchildren can be born and raised here.” (This is you!!)
Ann became blind and John cared for her until she died 23 May 1888 and was buried in Goshen. John then moved back to Pleasant Grove with his daughter, Harriett and son-in-law. He also became blind and bedridden the last six years of his life. Harriett cared for him and did everything she could to make him comfortable. He was always appreciative of everything that was done for him and he always thanked anyone who did anything for him. He died on 9 February, 1895 at the age of 95 and is buried in the Pleasant Grove, Utah cemetery.

We had a HOT time (multiple meanings here!) at the Thomas Family Reunion this year. These are not the greatest pictures but they will have to do until the pro photographers in the family put their pictures up!

A special THANKS to Kristi and Jason for hosting the event and doing so much to make it a success. Thanks also to Shelli for keeping us all updated and for figuring out a way to still have a great reunion after so many people had their summer plans altered. We had a great turn-out but we did miss our great brothers. Hopefully they will be able to make it next time! This year it was definitely the year of the baby!

Kevin and I drove down to Palisade State Park yesterday to get a better idea of the layout of the park and the group camping site that we reserved. FEEL FREE TO LEAVE A COMMENT AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS BLOG ENTRY.

Here is a view of the Sanpitch group campsite that we have reserved. As you can see, it was occupied at the time, so I couldn't get a good picture of the pavillion but you can see it in the background. There's a pretty grassy area. One sad note-- there is no campfire spot, just barbeque grills. The next picture is of the parking lot (and an added bonus photo of me taking the shot-- no charge!). There is plenty of parking.

Here is a view of Palisade Lake. I should have taken a few more shots of the lake. It really is beautiful and larger than I expected. Our campsite is right next to the lake. There are canoes and paddleboats available for rental. I hope Sam and Viv will bring their inflatable canoes. Be sure and bring your life jackets, especially for the little kids! Motorized boats are not allowed.

This playground is probably a 5-10 min. walk from our camp.

There are two showers in the ladies restroom. They looked pretty clean to me. I assume the showers in the men's restroom were similar. (We've certainly showered in worse! Mantua comes to mind!)

You can see the two trailer campsites we have reserved. They are the empty one in front and the one with the motorhome. This shot is taken from the groupsite entrance so you can see that it is very close. These camp spots have full hook-ups so we will have electricity, comfort for cooking, napping babies, and things like that.

Jordan Lambrecht's High School Graduation

Auntie Arlene and Amy had a wonderful time at Jordan Lambrecht's High School graduation on Tues. May 20 in Ogden. She graduated from Weber High. Her brother, Justin, and sister, Kristen, were there along with her dad, Joe. We were sad that Jean (our cousin) was not able to be there because of work. Jordan is a wonderful girl and plans to attend the U of U in the fall. Here are some pictures:

Here are some photos from the Potlicker Potluck that was Sun. Mar. 16, 2008 in honor of our wonderful dad, Glen Thomas, who has been gone 6 years. We love you and miss you Dad!

Thanks to everyone who came and if you didn't come, we missed you! Lots of yummy food and it was fun to watch Mom and Dad in the Pickle Barrel Skit! Thanks Karen, for the video and hosting it!

Mom called to say that she is being transferred and her new companion is 23 years old. If she sends a photo, I will post it.

This is Mom with her first companion. Her name is Sister Flake. She is also a mother of 10 children. Mom and Dad knew one of her sons in Nauvoo on their mission when he was a youth performing missionary there at the same time. Isn't it a small world?! Mom sure looks pretty in this photo.
